e was careful not to create too much noise when he left the house. Kieran had come home from work today in a very foul mood, and a nauseating headache in which the slightest noise could easily set him off. The door didn't make so much as a click as Jacob carefully and slowly turned the doorknob when he'd brought it as tight to the doorframe as he could. Not hearing a stir from the second floor, he grinned to himself, knowing that his task had been successful. Jake leaned slightly to the side, giving himself enough of a stretch to grab ahold of the thick duffle strap that attached to an apple green Adidas dufflebag that he'd brought with him from La Push. It made getaways such as this one easy, not to mention convenient. And he didn't need to worry about poking holes through his clothing because he had to carry them in his mouth. This is where the dufflebag came in handy. Truth be told the dufflebag strap was about chewed to hell from all of the rubbing and grinding it did against his incisors. But it was a small price to pay for damage done to his clothing when he had so little to begin with. Years of exploding the fabrics during phasing was finally starting to catch up with him.H
Which was why one particular thought often wandered into his head: perhaps it was time that Jacob find a job. He was slightly reluctant to, afraid that finding employment might infuriate Kieran, because Jacob may have had the audacity to take on a responsibility such as a job. Little or stupid things like that had a tendency to set him off, but Jacob didn't think that it was such a bad idea. If he played his cards right, he could try to have something set up where he could work during Renesmee's school hours, so that he'd have his evenings with her, or with the pack should something come up. Kieran had finally begun to give him a little more responsibility and Jake refused to allow himself to blow it over something as simple as missing an important meeting. But if it was work, Kieran might have been a little more understanding... or not. He'd most likely tell him that he should have found a job that had predictable hours, not ones that bounced off the walls. Which was why Jacob would have to be very selective with the choice of employment that he would decide on. But first, he thought it might not be too bad of an idea to run it by Kieran, first. Just to make sure it would be alright for Jacob to assume that kind of responsibility. In the mean time, he'd need to find some way to occupy all of his spare time during the day; God only knew that he had way too much of it on his hands. The pack was still cautious but alert, meaning nothing major had happened yet, but they had to be ready to go at a moment's notice. And Jacob meant a moment. However it wasn't likely he'd be told of anything that would be going down any time soon, he reckoned. Jacob hadn't quite worked himself into Kieran's graces enough to be considered to be told.
Jacob had wandered out of house in nothing more than a bath towel; his own to be exact. This way none of the pack members could come back at him for stealing a towel from the house without their consent. By the time that his towel had dropped from his waist, he'd already been lowered on all fours, the wind feeling wonderful as it combed through his russet fur. Jacob seized the towel with the front row of his teeth, and managed to root his nose in the small opening he purposefully left unzipped in order to stuff the towel inside. He was getting good at zipping and unzipping things in wolf form, as he again demonstrated this acquired skill by completely zipping up the dufflebag. The large wolf slipped the duffle strap around its neck, then chomped down on the strap itself to bring it securely off the ground before he took off in a dead run toward the forest.
Night was approaching fast, leaving Jacob to wonder what time it would have been in La Push; would he have been done with school yet? Or would it still be early this morning? Times differences always made his head ache, which is why he tried not to do the math in his head. He remembered the flight from the States to Ireland, he had terrible jet lag for days, although of course that didn't stop Kieran from rolling his ass out of bed. That was neither here nor there; Jacob had been secretly itching to go to the Annual Fire Festival that Dublin hosted since he first heard about it from Carlisle. There would be dancing, parades in the darkness while everyone carried torches (which reminded him, he needed to stop and find a trunk that would pass as a torch), there would be alcohol... hell what WOULDN'T be there? He would have loved nothing but to be able to bring Nessie with him, he was sure it would give her some kind of closure that he despised Ireland, if he'd been the one to invite to her to an event. Maybe he still could, if he could weasel permission out of Bella. He'd even check it out personally for himself, if it would make Bella feel better.
The quickest way, he'd learned, was through the forest right at the foot on Wicklow Mountains. Jacob had to do quite a bit of undercover sleuthing to figure that out... Yes, meaning he'd resorted to asking random people around Dublin for directions. Kieran certainly could expect Jacob to stay inside the house all day, did he? Like his wolfish counterpart, Jacob needed to be outside or he went crazy. At least when he was in his wolf form, running around like he loved to do, the contrast between Ireland and Washington wasn't quite as obvious. It certainly smelled different to Jacob; it smelled foreign, a veil that shielded his home from him, keeping him as far away from it as physically possible. There were times when Jacob would lay wide awake at night, and if there was enough of a breeze, he thought he could hear the distant howls from the Quilete family that he left behind. Sometimes he thought he heard Embry and Quil calling for him, both of their voices just barely above a whisper in the night's wind, until he realized that it was only Ewan's girlish snores that he'd heard. Still, when he hopped on that plane in Seattle, he'd left more than Billy behind. He left behind a good-sized portion of his heart as well. The hole grew and ached even more with each passing day, and Jacob couldn't help but think that this had to be the greatest sacrifice to date he'd made for Bella, more specifically Renesmee.
Jacob knew that he'd found the Hell Fire Club when he'd seen all the bright lights and the silhouette cast uphill by an illuminated building. He decided behind the tree he was currently adjacent to was the most ideal palce for him to rephase without attracting too much attention. He took no more than a split second to become human again, almost immediately he knelt down and quickly rummaged through his dufflebag for the garments that he'd packed. When he emerged from behind the tree, he was fully clothed. Before he pressed on, he tossed the dufflebag up into the tree, well hidden behind its boughs so that it would go undetected... hopefully. Then he broke off again in a brisk walk toward all the source of light about a quarter of a mile away from him. Jake took a minute to adjust the long-sleeved shirt he'd been wearing; the end result was the slight exposure of the thick elastic band that constricted his waist, patterned in blue, red, and brown plaid, however never once did he break his stride.[/blockquote][/blockquote]
